Frequently Asked Questions

Selecting your Style

How do I know which type of locs is right for me?

We offer Traditional Locs, Microlocs, and Sisterlocks, each with unique characteristics suited to different hair types, lifestyles, and maintenance preferences. During your consultation, we’ll assess your hair, discuss your goals, and recommend the best option based on your desired look and level of upkeep.

What are Sisterlocks®?

Sisterlocks® is a natural hair management system using small locs created with a tightly woven framework to allow women with tightly textured hair to maintain a small manicured set of locs. The small diameter of the loc makes them manageable and very easy to style.

What’s the difference between Microlocs and Sisterlocks?

While both are small and versatile, Microlocs typically use a wider range of parting patterns and installation methods, including interlocking or two-strand twists. They offer more flexibility in maintenance and pricing compared to the trademarked Sisterlocks™ system, which requires certified consultants and specific tools.

What size are Traditional Locs, and how are they installed?

Traditional Locs are larger in size, typically with a base parting of one inch or more. At Universalocs Studio, we install them using the interlocking method, which helps keep the locs neater for longer and extends the time between maintenance sessions.

Are Traditional Locs a good option for active lifestyles or low-maintenance routines?

Traditional Locs are ideal for clients looking for a bold, natural look with lower upkeep. The methods we use provide a secure base, making them perfect for active lifestyles.

Will Sisterlocks® make my hair thin?

Sisterlocks® do not cause the hair to thin. Actually, the woven framework of the technique should be gentle and cause no stress to the hair and scalp. The technique also requires no chemical and should not be excessively tightened.

Can I get Sisterlocks® if I have relaxed hair?

Yes you sure can get Sisterlocks® if you have relaxer. The transition will take a minimum of 1 ½ inches of natural hair growth and a trained Sisterlocks® professional can help you through your transition. During this time you will have plenty of styling options to choose from and guidance from a well versed hair care professional is key in this transition.

Loc Installation

What should I do to prepare for my installation appointment?

Come with clean, product-free hair that has been thoroughly detangled. Avoid using heavy oils or butters prior to your appointment. If you're unsure about how to prep, we’ll provide detailed instructions after your consultation to ensure your hair is installation-ready.

How long does it take for locs to be installed/established?

The locing process should take two thirds as long as getting individual braids that are comparable in size. The installation is typically a day-long process depending on the density and the length. There is usually a minimum of 16 hours set aside for this to be achieved.

This process also has plenty of variability with size, density of the hair, and the pace of the person doing the installation. The locs never need to be removed and are simply retightened as the hair grows from the scalp.

How long does it take for Sisterlocks® to be installed/established?

The locing process should take two-thirds as long as getting individual braids that are comparable in size. This process also has plenty of variability with size, the density of the hair, and the pace of the person doing the installation. However, the locs never need to be removed and are simply retightened as the hair grows from the scalp. There is no hair added to these locs so they are not heavy or need to be undone in any way.

Loc Maintenance

How often should I get my locs retightened?

Retightening schedule is recommended depending on your hair's texture, growth rate, and the type of locs you have. Staying on a consistent schedule helps prevent tangling, matting, and breakage at the roots.

How often do Microlocs need to be retightened?

Retightening is generally recommended every 4–8 weeks, depending on your hair texture, growth rate, and personal preferences. Staying on a consistent schedule helps maintain the integrity of your locs and prevents matting at the roots.

What happens if I wait too long between retightening sessions?

Delaying retightening can lead to root matting, uneven locs, and potential thinning or breakage. It can also make future maintenance more time-consuming. We recommend setting a regular schedule to keep your locs healthy and neat.

Can Sisterlocks® be removed and or taken down?

Yes you can remove and or take down Sisterlocks®. This process is a very long and rigorous process and is not recommended. This is not recommended due to the state that the hair will be left in after removal of the locs.

Can I do the Sisterlocks®myself?

This is not recommended because the Sisterlocks® technique has been taught to the hair care professional and covers a large range of textures and density of hair. This ensures that each person will get the locs that are suited for their hair type. Having a hair care professional helps to ensure that locs will not be thinned with unorthodox locing methods. Hair care professionals are also educated on cut, styles, and grooming tips that will bring lasting beauty to your locs.

Color + Style

Can color be applied to my locs?

Color can be applied to any locs based on the health of the hair.

Can new locs be styled?

Locs are versatile to style and depend on the health of the hair in the locs.

Can I style my Microlocs right after installation?

While it's best to let freshly installed Microlocs settle for a few weeks before heavy styling, light manipulation such as gentle updos or loose buns is typically fine. Over time, as your locs mature, you’ll enjoy even more styling flexibility and durability.
